Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef or ground sirloin for a leaner option
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 1 green bell pepper diced
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 3/4 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch optional, for thickening
  • 4-6 slices provolone or American cheese
  • 4-6 hamburger buns toasted
  • 1 tablespoon butter for toasting buns, optional

Instructions

  • Cook the beef: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess grease if necessary.
  • Sauté the veggies: Add the diced onion and green bell pepper to the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened.
  • Season and simmer: Stir in Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, ketchup, and Dijon mustard. Pour in the beef broth and bring to a gentle simmer. Cook for 5 minutes, allowing flavors to meld.
  • Thicken the mixture (optional): If a thicker consistency is desired, mix cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of water and stir into the beef mixture. Simmer for another 2-3 minutes.
  • Melt the cheese: Reduce heat to low and place cheese slices over the beef mixture. Cover and let the cheese melt for 2 minutes.
  • Assemble and serve: Toast the hamburger buns with butter in a separate pan if desired. Spoon the cheesy beef mixture onto the buns and serve immediately.
